De backlash van de aankondiging van het gevecht tussen lightweight kampioen Eddie Alvarez en featherweight kampioen Conor McGregor is in volle gang. Zo heeft Jose Aldo, interim featherweight kampioen, verklaard niet langer in Dana White te geloven en heeft om ontbinding van zijn contract gevraagd. De Braziliaan is gedesillusioneerd en enorm teleurgesteld in het feit dat hij nog langer op zijn revanche moet wachten. Dana White verklaarde immers na UFC 202 dat McGregor nu toch echt een keer zijn featherweight titel moet verdedigen, tegen Jose Aldo. Opnieuw krijgt de Ier een ander gevecht voorgeschoteld, en dit keer een gevecht waarbij ‘The Notorious’ de houder van twee belts tegelijk zou kunnen worden. Dit, en het feit dat McGregor zijn titel voorlopig niet hoeft in te leveren terwijl hij de titel niet verdedigd, is bij de Braziliaan totaal in het verkeerde keelgat geschoten. Hieronder de statement van ‘Scarface‘:
Dana [White] always said Conor [McGregor] couldn’t hold two belts in two different divisions and he had also denied the [Eddie Alvarez] fight last week,” Aldo said. “After all this, I see I can’t trust a single word that comes out of Dana White’s mouth and that Conor McGregor is the one really in charge of the company. Since I’m not here to be McGregor’s employee, I ask them to cancel my UFC contract.”
“The biggest proof that Conor runs the UFC is that when I was the champion, they wouldn’t let me go up to fight Anthony Pettis unless I vacated my belt,” Aldo continued. “With Conor, they let him do whatever he wants. I understand that he sells lots of tickets, but it gets to a point it stops being a sport and it becomes a circus. I don’t want to fight with the UFC, I just want to go on with my life and they can go on with theirs.”
De UFC wilde Aldo ook op de 205 card hebben, en boden hem zowel gevechten tegen Max Holloway of Anthony Pettis aan. Dit wilde Aldo op dat moment niet, maar hij kreeg dus tot zijn verbazing ook niet de rematch met Conor McGregor.
Het valt te bezien of de UFC Aldo’s verzoek zal inwilligen. De organisatie heeft in ieder geval een hoop lijmwerk te doen en zal waarschijnlijk snel met Aldo aan tafel gaan zitten. Aldo wacht dat in ieder geval niet af en lijkt resoluut:
If [White] likes me and my family, I just hope he released me. I don’t want a fight. I want to leave as I came in. The UFC and WEC didn’t give me anything. Everything I conquered was my merit and from my team. Nobody gave me anything. I conquered everything. And I gave them a lot more than they gave me back. I just want them to release me from my contract. I’m not a whore to sell myself [for money].
I don’t even want to fight MMA. I want to follow a career in another sport. That’s what I want.
